With only five ingredients, this smooth, sweet, delicious syrup comes together quickly; making your breakfast a real treat any ol’ time.

Very Popular Recipe

This recipe is one that you can find all over the Internet.

There are tons of different versions of it. I have heard people refer to it as Liquid Gold Syrup, Grandma’s Favorite Syrup and Best Ever Syrup.

It is such a yummy syrup and totally worth the small amount of time that it takes to make it.

I share my version because it can easily be tweaked to be full of good whole food ingredients.

Simple and Quick

Some versions have Karo Syrup, not an ingredient that you really want to use and totally not necessary for making this syrup.

This recipe comes together quickly and doesn’t use any fancy ingredients, unless you call buttermilk fancy. If you don’t have buttermilk, you can replace it with ½ cup whole milk and 1 tablespoon vinegar.

I made this recipe a lot of times trying to come up with an equally delicious dairy free version. I will share that version here as well. It is really just as yummy if you use the right ingredients.

Fancy or Not?

If you want to get fancy, cut up some bananas, make the honey nuts from the notes of this recipe and then plate your waffle or pancake with both sprinkled on top. Drizzle on some of this warm syrup and you will feel like you sat down at a top rated restaurant.

Would I consider this recipe health food? No, but it is definitely healthier than buying a bottle of syrup filled with high fructose corn syrup and caramel coloring.

Buttermilk Syrup

½ cup butter

½ cup buttermilk

¾ cup sweetener (see Notes)

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 teaspoon baking soda

Bring ingredients to boil in a saucepan. As soon as it begins to boil, remove from heat and add baking soda and vanilla. Stir. Syrup will bubble up and double in size when you add the baking soda and vanilla so begin with a larger saucepan. So yum!! Serve warm over pancakes, waffles, french toast or whatever else you dream of.

Dairy Free Buttermilk Syrup

(Can we really call it that since there is no buttermilk? Ha!)

½ cup Organic Earth Balance Spread (use organic since it is soy based)

½ cup Thai Kitchen Organic coconut milk

¾ cup sweetener (see Notes)

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 teaspoon baking soda

Bring ingredients to boil in a saucepan. As soon as it begins to boil, remove from heat and add baking soda and vanilla. Stir. Syrup will bubble up when you add the baking soda and vanilla so begin with a larger saucepan. So yum!!

Serve warm over pancakes, waffles, french toast or whatever else you dream of. Store in a airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Tweak It Notes

  • BUTTER – Grass Fed Butter is an awesome choice. It has higher vitamin A and beta carotene and heart healthy fats.
  • DAIRY -FREE BUTTER – If you can’t have soy you can use a different dairy free butter. I have made this with coconut oil many times and it just isn’t quite the same. It is pretty good with the Miyokos butter but the flavor with the Earth Balance is more similar to the original.
  • SWEETENER – Using a combo of sweeteners keeps one sweetener from taking over the whole flavor of the syrup. Natural sweeteners have more distinct flavors than refined sugars. I typically use a heavy handed 1/3 cup coconut sugar and another heavy handed 1/3 cup of honey or maple syrup. You can also use just one sweetener. White sugar and brown sugar are also options. This honey from Azure Standard is awesome.
